Kota Stone

Kota Stone is a fine-grained limestone from the Kota region of Rajasthan, used across India for decades for hard-wearing, budget-friendly floors. It is tough, cool underfoot and naturally non-slip in its natural finish, so it suits verandas, parking areas, corridors and outdoor paths.

What Kota Stone looks like

Typically an even blue-grey or green-grey with very little pattern, plus occasional natural brown tones. Polished it has a soft sheen; in natural or honed finish it is matt and grippy, which is why it is so common on verandas and staircases.

Where it works best

  • Verandas, sit-outs and courtyards
  • Parking areas and driveways
  • Corridors, terraces and utility areas
  • Staircases in apartment blocks and schools

Care and maintenance

Very durable and easy to live with. Sweep and mop with plain water or a mild cleaner, and avoid acids. A polished Kota floor can be re-polished after years of wear to bring the sheen back.

Kota Stone: common questions

Is Kota stone slippery?

Not in its natural or honed finish, which is why it is popular for verandas, bathrooms and wet outdoor areas. A mirror polish is smoother, so keep that for dry indoor floors.

Is Kota stone good for flooring?

Yes. It is one of India's most durable and economical flooring stones, which is why you see it in homes, schools, offices and parking areas.
