In short
Granite is harder, more heat- and stain-resistant and needs less care, so it is the better choice for kitchen counters, staircases, outdoor areas and busy floors. Marble is softer and etches with acids like lemon or vinegar, but its veining and cool, smooth feel make it the classic choice for living-room floors, walls and pooja rooms. Many Indian homes use both: granite in the kitchen and on the stairs, marble in the living spaces.
The short version
Both are natural stone, but they are made very differently. Granite is an igneous rock, formed from cooled magma and made mostly of quartz and feldspar, which makes it very hard. Marble is a metamorphic rock, limestone recrystallised under heat and pressure, made mostly of calcite. Calcite is much softer than quartz and reacts with acid. That one difference explains almost everything below.
| Granite | Marble | |
|---|---|---|
| Made of | Quartz, feldspar, mica | Calcite (recrystallised limestone) |
| Hardness (Mohs) | About 6–7: resists scratches | About 3–4: scratches more easily |
| Acids (lemon, vinegar, tomato) | Not affected | Etches: leaves dull marks |
| Stains | Low risk; seal lighter colours | Higher risk; seal and reseal |
| Heat | Handles hot vessels well | Tolerates heat, but marks more easily |
| Look | Speckled, grainy or flowing; wide colour range | Soft veining; whites, creams and greens |
| Feel underfoot | Hard, cool | Smooth, cool, luxurious |
| Maintenance | Low | Medium: gentle cleaners, periodic polishing |
| Best for | Kitchens, stairs, outdoors, heavy-traffic floors | Living rooms, bedrooms, walls, pooja rooms |
Room by room
Kitchen countertops: granite
Indian kitchens see turmeric, oil, tamarind, lemon and hot vessels every day. Granite handles all of them. Marble etches from acidic spills and stains more easily, so we rarely recommend it for a working kitchen. Dark granites such as Black Galaxy and Tan Brown are the most forgiving. If you want a light kitchen, P White or Cel White granite give the look with far less worry. See our kitchen granite guide.
Living-room and bedroom floors: either
Marble is the traditional choice for living spaces: it feels smooth and cool underfoot and its veining gives a room a calm, premium look. Granite is tougher and lower-maintenance, which suits homes with children, pets or heavy footfall. Light granites now give a marble-like brightness at a lower maintenance cost.
Staircases: granite
Stair treads take concentrated wear at the nosing. Granite holds its edge and polish far longer. A leather or flamed finish adds grip.
Bathrooms: either, with care
Granite is the easier choice for vanity tops, where cosmetics and cleaners are a risk for marble. For walls and floors, either works; avoid a mirror polish on wet floors.
Outdoors, verandas and parking: granite or Kota stone
Use flamed or leather-finish granite, or natural Kota stone, for anything exposed to rain. Both stay grippy and weather well.
Pooja rooms and feature walls: marble
White marble remains the traditional choice for pooja rooms, and wall cladding sees little wear, so marble's softness matters less there.
What about cost?
Neither is automatically cheaper. Common Indian granites and Indian marbles overlap a lot in price, while imported Italian marble sits at the top of the range. The stone variety, grade, slab size, thickness and finish matter more than "marble or granite". We explain this in what decides marble and granite price per sq ft.
