In short
For most Indian kitchens, choose a dark or busy-patterned granite such as Black Galaxy, Tan Brown or Coffee Brown, in 18–20 mm thickness with a polished or leather finish. These hide turmeric, oil and crumbs and handle hot vessels. Light granites like P White look brighter but should be sealed and wiped promptly. Avoid marble and soft limestones on a working kitchen counter.
Why granite suits Indian kitchens
A kitchen platform in India takes a lot: tadka splatter, turmeric, tamarind and lemon, heavy pressure cookers and hot kadais set straight down. Granite is hard enough to resist scratches, is not affected by food acids and copes with heat. With a basic wipe-down it looks the same twenty years on.
Pick a colour that works with your cooking
| Look | Stones | Hides stains & crumbs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black with sparkle | Black Galaxy, Royal Black, Black Blue | Very well | The most popular choice; flecks hide crumbs |
| Textured black | Telephone Black, R Black, Black DC | Very well | Reads black, hides water spots |
| Solid black | Jet Black | Stains: well. Water marks: they show | Clean, modern; leather finish hides marks |
| Warm brown | Tan Brown Red, Coffee Brown, Tiki Brown | Very well | Suits wooden and cream cabinets |
| Light | P White, Cel White, Safari Pearl Blue | Fair: seal and wipe promptly | Brightens small or dark kitchens |
Finish: polished or leather?
Mirror polish brings out the most colour and sparkle and is the easiest to wipe clean. On plain blacks it shows fingerprints and water marks. Leather finish has a soft, textured sheen that hides marks and feels premium to the touch, but crumbs can sit in the texture, so wipe with a cloth rather than a sponge. Flamed finishes are rough and meant for outdoors, not counters.
Thickness and edges
Kitchen granite in India is usually 18–20 mm thick. For a chunkier look, the front edge can be doubled (laminated) so it reads as about 40 mm without the weight and cost of a full thick slab. Common edge profiles are a simple eased edge, half bullnose and full bullnose. Rounded edges are kinder to hips and children's heads.
Measure before you buy
- Measure every run of counter: length along the wall, and depth (typically 600–650 mm).
- Mark the sink and hob positions and the side of the sink drain.
- Note backsplash height if you want granite on the wall too.
- Allow 5–10% extra for cutting, joints and pattern matching.
Send these to us on WhatsApp and we work out how many slabs you need and where the joints fall, so that seams avoid the sink and hob.
Care
Wipe daily with warm water and a little dish soap, and dry plain black surfaces to avoid water marks. Avoid acid and bleach cleaners, which can dull the polish over time. Dark granites rarely need sealing; seal light granites after installation and every year or two. To test: put a few drops of water on the counter — if it darkens the stone within a few minutes, it is time to reseal.
