Stone for Kerala's monsoons

Trivandrum gets two monsoons a year and stays humid in between, so the stone you choose should cope with water. Granite is ideal: it barely absorbs moisture and will not warp, swell or grow mould the way some materials do.

For sit-outs, verandas, open courtyards and the steps up to the house, choose a flamed or leather finish, or natural Kota stone, so surfaces stay grippy in the rain. Inside, polished granite in black or brown is a long-standing favourite for Kerala kitchens, while lighter stones like P White brighten the living areas during grey monsoon months.
