In short
Marble and granite in India are priced per square foot, and the rate depends mainly on the stone variety and where it comes from, its grade (colour consistency and defects), slab size, thickness and finish. Cutting, edge work, transport and GST are added on top. To compare quotes fairly, check that they are for the same stone, grade, thickness and finish, and whether the price covers the full slab area or only the finished area.
How stone is priced
In India, marble and granite are almost always quoted per square foot of slab. Two quotes for "black granite" can differ by a wide margin, and usually for good reasons. Here is what moves the rate.
1. Stone variety and origin
Common Indian granites and Indian marbles are the most affordable. Rare colours, very consistent patterns and imported stone, especially Italian marble, cost more. Distance matters too: stone quarried closer to you travels less.
2. Grade
Within one variety, slabs are graded by colour consistency, pattern, cracks, pits and natural spots. Top-grade slabs with an even colour cost more than commercial grades, which can be perfectly good for areas like utility rooms and parking.
3. Slab size
Large "gangsaw" slabs (roughly 8–10 ft long) cost more per sq ft than smaller "cutter" slabs or tiles, but they mean fewer joints on long counters and big floors.
4. Thickness
Thicker slabs use more stone and weigh more to transport. Granite for floors and counters is usually 16–20 mm; natural stones like Kota for outdoor use are often 20–30 mm.
5. Finish
Mirror polish is standard. Leather, flamed and honed finishes involve extra processing and may be priced differently.
6. Work and fitting
Cutting to size, edge profiles (bullnose, half bullnose, doubled edges), sink and hob cut-outs, and grooves on stair treads are usually charged separately from the stone. Installation labour and materials are typically quoted separately as well.
7. Transport and GST
Loading, freight and unloading depend on the quantity and the distance to your site. GST is charged on top of the stone price; our quotations include GST at 18%.
How to compare two quotes
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Same stone name and grade | Trade names vary; a cheaper "Black Galaxy" may be a lower grade |
| Same thickness | 16 mm and 20 mm slabs are not comparable |
| Same finish | Leather and flamed finishes can cost more than polish |
| Gross vs net area | Is the rate charged on the full slab or only the finished area? |
| What is included | Cutting, edges, cut-outs, transport, GST, installation |
| Wastage allowance | Usually 5–10% extra for cutting and pattern matching |
